NOCTURNAE
Soapstone, Maple, Glass, Stainless Steel
One of a Kind
The title Nocturnae comes from the Latin feminine — “belonging to the night.”
The name arrived clearly, like a bell sounding in darkness. The image followed — moving in and out of thought, in and out of feeling — until it resolved itself within the stone.
Carved from luminous soapstone, this barn owl leans forward with quiet intensity. Her gaze is steady, unflinching, and present. There is no excess in the form; every curve and plane has been refined to allow the mass and movement of the figure to speak without distraction.
This sculpture was not conceived to decorate a space. It was created to anchor one.
Nocturnae is meant to be placed at eye or shoulder height, where the viewer is invited to walk around the piece. As you move, the form unfolds — wing lines shifting, surface tones changing, light gathering and receding across the stone. The experience is physical and contemplative.
The owl is permanently fused to a solid maple plank using internal stainless steel armature running through the legs. The maple base is permanently secured to a glass foundation. Nothing is removable. The structure is intentional, integrated, and built for permanence.
This work demanded long nights and unwavering focus. It carries that devotion within it.
Nocturnae remains a singular presence — mysterious, grounded, and enduring.
